What it’s made out of

I made my own pink neon oil paint for this painting, as well as using Gamblin oil colors and mediums on linen canvas. This painting is built to last the test of time! Once dry, oil paintings are amazingly resilient.

How big is it?

It’s six foot wide and five feet tall. It’s huge! You’re gonna need a big wall for this thing, that’s for sure. I like to paint large.

What it’s about, and how it’s made

I leave my paintings open enough for viewers to bring their own narrative to each piece of my art. Whatever you see in this painting is what it’s about.

That said, my inspiration for this piece was an idea of a “digital landscape”; I sketched Off the Air using Adobe Photoshop and RunwayML, which is an artificial intelligence program for visual artists. I use AI to create some of the layers in my Photoshop sketch, which are then blended with photos I’ve taken myself and stolen (maybe from you if we follow each other on social media!), my own drawings from illustrator, and various other digital processes; whatever I’m obsessed with at the time. I’m a web developer and techie in my other life, and all of my art starts digitally.

I project the resulting digital file on a finished canvas using a projector like I did for about a million work meetings and teaching computer classes long ago, and I paint in the dark. No matter how carefully I work on the digital file and work to stay in the projected lines, when I turn on the light it looks completely different. I love this process as it’s a lot like automatic drawing and removes me from my careful planning even while using it. Once I turn on the lights, I usually paint until it’s finished. Large paintings like this have taken from anywhere from three days to three months to complete.

About the artist

After twenty years working in tech and tech-oriented positions in other industries, I decided it was time to paint again in 2019. I’ve been in several shows in Denver, including a solo show and a place at ArtPrize, which is the largest art contest in the U.S. with over a half-million attendees. You can read more about me and my work on my bio page or this article, which was released in 2022.

About the series

The Unnatural series has been displayed at the former SassaBird Fine Arts Gallery in Denver and was selected for ArtPrize, the largest art contest in the U.S. with a projected half-million attendees.
